The mission of SOMOS Performance Group is to provide performing arts training and performances which are intentionally culturally diverse and accessible to all persons of every ability.
Using the time-honored device of a touring performing company, SOMOS Performance Group will focus on providing positive youth and family experiences for audiences and performers of diverse backgrounds and abilities in spaces throughout our community.
It is our vision that through the performance of culturally diverse and celebratory materials in a variety of performance styles and modes, we will expand the opportunity for our community to see themselves in and be a part of the performing arts.
SOMOS Performance Group is a registered 501c3 Non-Profit Organization. All contributions are 100% tax deductible.
Who We Are
SOMOS Performance Group is a new organization founded by long-time El Paso community artists and educators who wish to provide more inclusive and diverse performing arts opportunities to young people. Our production and performance legacy resides in our work with well established local and regional arts organizations and educational institutions.
UP NEXT!
SOMOS Performance Group is excited to announce the Summer Pop-Up Theatre! The Summer Pop-Up Theatre is made possible through a partnership with The Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC). All classes and performances will take place at The MACC located at 201 Franklin Ave in downtown El Paso. This immersive 7 week event will focus on developing scripts, creating characters, costumes, props and sets, understanding makeup techniques, and will culminate in a free public performance. Throughout the Summer Pop-Up Theatre participants will develop their current understanding, hone their skills, and learn new techniques from local teaching professionals in their respective fields. SOMOS Performance Group is proud to bring professional insight from teaching professionals such as playwright Georgina Escobar, makeup artist Ivan Cano, costumer Luis Torres, among others. Guest Teaching Artist Georgina Escobar:
Georgina Escobar is an international playwright and musical theatre writer. She is an O’Neill National Musical Theatre Conference, American Musical Theatre Project, National Alliance for Musical Theatre, Alcove, 121 Project, MacDowell, Djerassi, Fornés Workshop, Clubbed Thumb Emerging Writers Group, Kilroy’s, & La Mama Umbria writer. Escobar is the recipient of the Gotham & Variety Audio Honors, the National Kennedy Theatre for Young Audiences, and Outstanding Service to Women on the Border awards. Her plays have been seen in Canada, the UK, México, Italy, Denmark & Sweden and nationally at INTAR, New York Children’s Theatre, Dixon Place, Clubbed Thumb, Hartford Stages, Lincoln Center, Bushwick Starr, Two Rivers, Milagro, Aurora Theatre, and People’s Light. As an arts educator she has taught at Kingsborough College, UTEP, Princeton University, University of New Mexico, and currently at Dartmouth College. Musical writing credits include LITTLE DUENDE, DESAPARECIDAS, VINYL CAFE: THE MUSICAL, FRIDA with director Diane Paulus, and WE BELONG TOGETHER featuring music by Ritchie Valens and Los Lobos. During the Summer Pop-Up Theatre Georgina Escobar will be working with performers on developing and writing scripts. Escobar will be leading participants through the process of setting scenes, character development, and dialogue to help them create and build their concepts into workable scripts.
