Workshops

This year’s workshop performance and technical theatre activities are driven by the participant engaging in an oral history interview with a friend or family member to create scenes that are presented on a giant ofrenda-like setting, with dance and movement enhanced by alebrije characters. The prompts for the interview have been composed by the workshop facilitators. They are designed to draw out memories of events, traditions and feelings that form the basis for the plot of individual scenes. In addition, the interviewee will be asked about the role of animals in their lives. Associating the animals chosen with particular traits and personalities informs the creation of fantastical alebrije characters. The recorded materials will also form part of the soundscape of the performance. Acting/Performance components of the workshop include improvisation, dramatization of the recorded memories, creative movement and dance. Technical components include props, mask and costume pieces, and construction of the ofrenda scenic elements. The workshop concludes with a free public performance of the piece that will be recorded. SOMOS Performance Group would like to share the recording with The MAAC for future showings, possibly in conjunction with Dia De Los Muertos celebrations.

Classroom Expectations

Students are supervised by staff and teaching artists at all times. Students agree to our classroom agreements, which they create along with their teaching artists. Students will use their own words to articulate the agreements, which will include “Respect your teacher, respect each other, respect the space,” “we work together as a team,” and other classroom standards. Parents should not stay for class unless their participation is an accommodation their child requires to participate fully. Alebrijes Theatre Workshop staff will communicate with parents about any concerns. While we make every effort for all students to participate throughout the program, a student may be removed at SOMOS’s discretion if an irreconcilable disciplinary issue arises.

What should students bring and not bring?

DO bring

  • Your own snacks.
  • Water bottle (no glass please).
  • A sweater or hoodie for those chilly indoor ACs.

DO wear

  • Comfortable clothing that allows for movement and messy activities (please wear shorts or leggings under skirts).
  • Closed-toe shoes that stay on your feet.

DON’T bring

  • Valuable, irreplaceable, or easily lost items.
  • Tablets, video games, laptops, or other electronics. Phones are permitted but must be turned off.
  • Weapons of any kind, even props.

My child has an allergy.

Please make us aware of all allergies and sensitivities.  We will do our best to safely accommodate them. However, if your child has a severe allergy to common food items such as peanuts, please note that we are not the only users of our program space, can’t guarantee that our space will be free of that allergen, and can’t regulate what others bring in their lunch.

How do pick-up and drop-off work?

  • On the first day, please plan to park and accompany your student for check in.
  • After the first day, a program staff member in a SOMOS t-shirt will be posted outside the building and you can drop off your student to that person. Do not drop off your student if you do not see the SOMOS staff member in their t-shirt, as they may be in the process of escorting students inside the MACC space.
  • Starting on the first day, pick-up will be at the main entrance to the MACC. We encourage a carpool line.
  • If you need to pick up your student before the end of the program day, or if there are any changes to adults approved for pick-up, please email the details to manny@somosep.org or text to (915) 224-2567.  Your student will be ready to go at the time you specify.
  • There is no early drop-off or late pick up.

What if my child is sick?

Please don’t come to class if you are sick. Email or text Manny to notify us if your student will be absent. There are no make-up sessions or refunds for missed class days.

How do you protect kids at your camp?

  • Kids are always supervised by staff.
  • Students are released only to the people authorized by their parents/guardians. Please make sure you include the name of any co-parents in your paperwork if they are permitted to pick up students. We will not assume a parent is authorized if their name is not on the form.
  • Teaching artists have undergone a background check and have worked with SOMOS extensively. Any teaching assistants, who may be under 18, will have a reference check.
  • Teaching artists have training in Adult & Child CPR and how to administer an Epi-pen in an emergency. Other than the Epi-Pen, teaching artists are unable to dispense medication for students.

Do you offer scholarships?

We offer need-based partial scholarships on a space available basis as well as scholarships for members of the MACC. Please contact Manny for information.

My child needs accommodations to participate fully.

Please talk to us more about this! Our camp is open to all. Please contact Manny to share information, or include it on your registration form.

Can I see the space ahead of time?

Yes! We will be holding an orientation June 18th at 6:00 PM. The MACC is also a public space and you can visit them during their open hours to see the space in its entirety.

My kid is turning 7 by the end of the summer. Can they still participate in June?

Yes! If your kid is turning the 7 by the end of the summer, they can enroll.

REFUND POLICIES

  • Please don’t dispute a charge that you authorized through your credit provider or Paypal. Instead, please follow the policies below.
  • Until 2 weeks before the start of camp, you may request a full refund for any reason. Your tuition amount, minus a $50 fee, will be refunded.
  • If the program is less than 2 weeks away, no refund is possible, as we may not be able to fill your student’s spot. However, you may turn your program fee into a donation.
  • You may transfer your registration to another student.
  • If factors outside of reasonable human control prevent the program from being held as scheduled, including but not limited to weather disasters, ongoing interruption of electrical service, shutdown due to pandemic, laws or other government orders, and/or events typically included in “force majeure”, you will have the option to turn your program fees into a donation, or you can receive a full refund. If these events happen part way through the program, requiring that the program end early, you can turn your tuition into a donation or request a partial refund.
  • We are unable to offer discounts or refunds based on your student’s scheduled or unscheduled absences from the program.
  • Each program has a minimum registration of 12 students. If the minimum enrollment is not met, we reserve the right to cancel the program. If the program is canceled, we can offer you a refund or turn your camp fee into a donation.
  • If the program is full, you may be placed on a waitlist. If a space becomes available, you will receive an email and have 24 hours to claim your spot.
